We often mark the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersex Discrimination, and Transphobia (#IDAHOBIT) by adding it to our calendar of events, enjoying cupcakes, and raising flags. But how well do we understand the significance of this day and its evolution?
The roots of IDAHOBIT can be traced back to a pivotal decision on December 17, 1990, when the World Health Organization (WHO) removed homosexuality from its International Classification of Diseases (ICD). This landmark move challenged the stigma and discrimination faced by the LGBTQIA+ community, ushering in a new era of recognizing and affirming their rights.
Homosexuality had been classified as a “mental disorder” under “Sexual Deviation” in the ICD-8 published by the WHO in 1950. The removal in 1990 was a turning point, but more work was ahead. In 2004, French academic and activist Louis-Georges Tin launched the first International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO) campaign, choosing May 17th to commemorate the WHO’s declassification.
Since then, IDAHOBIT has expanded to include biphobia, intersex discrimination, and transphobia, reflecting the diverse challenges faced by the LGBTQIA+ community. In 2019, the WHO reclassified transgender health issues, removing them from “mental and behavioural disorders” to a chapter on sexual health. This shift was a critical move away from pathologizing transgender identities.
Nations were given until January 2022 to implement these changes, recognizing the importance of affirming transgender identities and ensuring the healthcare needs of this community are addressed.
In November 2023, Victoria acknowledged asexual, aromantic, and agender individuals, ensuring the government uses the acronym LGBTQIA+ to be more inclusive. The term “ace” is sometimes used as an umbrella term for these identities. This step reflects the commitment to listen to community feedback and ensure everyone is represented.
IDAHOBIT reminds us of the ongoing struggle for LGBTQIA+ rights and the importance of combating #discrimination in all its forms. This day fosters #acceptance, understanding, and #support through #education, advocacy, and #awareness campaigns while challenging discriminatory attitudes worldwide.
Let’s stand united in diversity this IDAHOBIT and beyond. Your contribution matters, whether it’s raising awareness, sharing resources, or fostering inclusive environments. Join the movement by advocating for LGBTQIA+ rights and creating spaces where every individual can thrive free from discrimination.
Together, we can make a real impact!
